Job Summary
Mission: Promote the growth and deeper development of Special Collection’s Latter-day Saint collections by aiding curators in their collection development activity and helping to identify collection gaps related to underrepresented populations.
Essential Functions
Assist curators in Latter-day Saint collection development
- Assist in all levels of collection development for both physical and digital content, including identifying, appraising, and acquiring
- Assist in identifying gaps in Special Collection’s Latter-day Saint collections
- Participate in fieldwork with a sponsoring curator
- Aid in preprocessing of collections
- Assist in developing and maintaining positive relationships with donors and vendors
Research
- Provide research assistance for Special Collections Latter-day Saint collections
- Research and identify gaps in Special Collections Latter-day Saint collections
- Research and recommend strategies to fill identified collection gaps
- Conducts research needed to fulfill reference, instruction, and outreach assignments
Provide reference and outreach
- Respond to assigned reference inquires
- Participate in departmental reference work
- Assist curators with student instruction as needed
- Curate case exhibits featuring Special Collections Latter-day Saint materials as requested
Citizenship
- Meet with Special Collections Latter-day Saint curators monthly
- Attend department meetings and accept committee assignments within the department
- Participate in the professional community for libraries and archives
- Participate in the academic community of Latter-day Saint studies
- Establish collegial relationships with colleagues and the public
Professional Development/Continuous Learning
- Participate in department, library, and university trainings
- Attend campus lectures, brown bags, and symposiums related to Latter-day Saint topics and study
- With supervisor, identify other position-related professional development activities and the scope of involvement. (Examples are included in the Principles and Procedures Related to Staff/Administrative Professional Development Document.)
Education/Experience
Minimum education/experience required:
- Bachelor’s degree or 1 year experience in research and/or writing
Preferred:
- Degree in History, English, or Religion
- Begun or completed course work in an MLS/MLIS degree
- Training and/or experience in a special collection’s library or archive
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:
Required:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of Latter-day Saint history and modern culture
- Ability to work with, or conducting research on, minority populations
- Flexibility and ability to work both independently and in collaborative teams
- Strong planning and personal management skills
- High familiarity with computers
- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent writing skills
Preferred:
- Awareness of current trends in Latter-day Saint research
- Experience with the Latter-day Saint academic community
- Experience with library and archival research
- Knowledge of archival principles and practices
- Knowledge of library systems and resources
- Knowledge of archival standards
- Understanding of metadata standards and library classification systems
Employee Class: 3/4 Time (28 hour)
Work Location: Provo Campus
Physical Exam Required: Y
Physical Exam Details: Moderate physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions. Typical physical efforts may include:
- Climbing ladders or footstools, 5 minutes, 4 times per day
- Relocate a 40 lb. box of archival materials, 5 minutes, 4 times per day
