Special Collections Management Assistant
This position assists the Special Collections Management Supervisor in safeguarding collections materials against the 10 agents of deterioration in accordance with the library's Preservation Plan by performing and promoting preservation through collections management processes, management of collections storage and the storage environment, and performing preservation training. This position also assists in the training of student employees in Collections Management policies and procedures.
What you'll do in this position:
- Reduce the risk of loss by following established library and archival location management practices, including the BYU Library's integrated library systems, and by following risk-reduction measures in all collections management processes.
- Transport and track Special Collections materials during day-to-day shifting of materials, when materials are moved between departments and areas, and when materials are being deaccessioned.
- Assist with training student employees in proper methods of processing collections materials, storing, handling, transporting, and managing locations.
- Flag problematic numbering, titling, and other archival description discrepancies and collaborate with the Archival Processing Section to resolve issues
- Assist with monitoring conditions of materials stored in the collections storage area, identify preservation issues or anomalies, and facilitate solutions for better care.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- High school diploma with 1 year of experience working in a library, archive, or museum.
- Familiarity with archive or library operations.
- Familiarity with library call number systems and archival numbering systems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and cooperate with personnel from the library.
- Ability to train, supervise, and motivate student employees.
- Ability to make independent decisions within the boundaries of library policy.
Preferred
- Conversant in library and archives operations, procedures, and services, with a working knowledge of cataloging rules, protocols, and classification standards.
- Experience using integrated library systems, especially ArchiveSpace.
- Familiarity with preservation practices for rare book and manuscript materials.

Physical Exam Details: Relocating boxes up to 50 lbs. Moving carts up to 200 lbs. Works in a cold vault with a temperature of 40 degrees. Works in a freezer with temperatures of 4-10 degrees.

Approximate Starting Salary: $46,000-$59,500 depending on experience and qualifications.
